About

Coal in the UK maps the coal industry infrastructure in the UK, and shows plans for expanding it. Inside the maps, by clicking on coal mines and power plants you can get detailed information about each site.

The maps include existing coal-fired power stations and mines, proposed power stations, and the large number of new opencast coal mining sites which are currently in local authority planning processes – whether approved, rejected, are awaiting a decision from planners, or are sites where an application is expected.

The site was created by Richard Hawkins at the Public Interest Research Centre.

It is based on original research & assistance, by the following:

  • New Mines - Ketty Dean / Tim Hewke
  • Proposed Power Stations - Lorne Stockman / WDM / Richard Hawkins
  • Existing Mines & Power Stations - Richard Hawkins / Tim Hewke
  • Map - Richard Hawkins with priceless help from Adam Schneider of GPS Visualizer

Many thanks to all.
